We specialise in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques
for treatment resistant depression in children and adults.
Current biomedical
and psychological models of depression typically identify and treat
depression symptomatically without considering the underlying neurobiology
(APA, 1994; Beck, 2005; Kupfer et al., 2002) . A significant number of
these patients do not respond to traditional treatments for depression
or show very poor treatment response.
The underlying neurobiological
and psychological causes of depression can be extremely diverse with
both organic and psychological/developmental conditions contributing
to the depressive symptoms (Albert et al., 2004; Brodaty et al., 2005;
2001; Dieguez et al., 2004; Fujikawa et al., 1997; Jensen et al., 1996;
Kemp et al., 2005; Nickel et al., 2007; Perrella et al., 2006; Shea
et al., 1992; van Pragg, 1998; Villeneuve & Lemelin,
2005; Waldstein et al., 2003).
Our whole brain function and psychological
testing in conjunction with a clinical interview can help to clarify
your mood disorder to aid in the identification of more affective treatment
and intervention using both pharmacological (medication) and psychological
(psychotherapy) methods.
Once your condition is clarified a number
of new psychological and pharmacological treatments are now available
for treatment resistant depression (Alexopoulos, 2001; Bellino et
al., 2006; El-Mallakh, 2000; Grade et al., 1998; Hammond, 2005; Johnson
et al., 1992; McMain & Pos, 2007; Meares, 1980; 2006;
Meares & Sara, 1995; Nasr, 2004; Nickel et al., 2007; Perrella
et al., 2006; Purper-Ouakil et al., 2005; Rozelle & Budzynski,
1995; Sattar et al., 2002; Schwartz et al., 2004; Sookman & Steketee,
2007; Spencer et al., 2006; Stevenson et al., 2005; Vaishnavi et al.,
2006; Villeneuve & Lemelin, 2005; Xiong et al., 2005).
In addition
to cognitive behavioural therapy, depending on your presentation
and profile this will generally include another therapeutic form such
as neurofeedback, psychodynamic, self-psychology approaches and specialised
schema based therapies have been shown to have positive results (Hammond,
2005; McMain & Pos, 2007; Meares, 2006; Rozelle & Budzynski,
1995; Silver et al., 1995; Sookman & Steketee, 2007; Spinhoven
et al., 2007; Stevenson et al., 2005).
